Date: October 16, 2016
Event: Hollywood Casino 400
Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Location: Kansas Speedway (1.5-mile tri-oval)
Start/Finish: 20th/ 10th (Completed 267 of 267 laps)
After taking the green flag at the 1.5-mile tri-oval track in 20th, Kahne spent an early stretch of Sunday’s event teetering on the edge of the top 20. But by Lap 52, he had moved up to 16th following multiple caution flags. He continued to push forward, moving to the verge of the top 10 in 11th on Lap 115. After another caution, Kahne visited pit road for four tires, fuel and quick adjustments to the Farmers Insurance Chevy and found position inside the top 10 on the ensuing restart. By Lap 168, Kahne had raced his way to eighth just before making a scheduled pit stop for four tires and fuel under green-flag conditions. After visiting pit road, Kahne’s No. 5 Chevy experienced tire rub and had to return to pit road. Kahne returned to the track outside of the top 20 down a lap, but he raced his way to position himself as the first car a lap down. The hard work paid off when a caution flag waved on Lap 222, earning Kahne a free pass back to the lead lap. Kahne used the fresh start to his advantage and battled his way back into the top 10 with less than 20 laps remaining. He held his ground and ultimately finished 10th at Kansas.
Kahne is currently 17th in the point standings as he heads to Talladega Superspeedway for a 500-mile race on Sunday, Oct. 23. Television coverage begins on NBC Sports Network at 2 p.m. ET.
