14th-Place Finish for Kahne at Martinsville

This weekend Kasey Kahne piloted the red-and-black No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet SS at Martinsville Speedway. Precipitation canceled qualifying and the field was set based on owner points, earning Kahne the 13th starting spot. In today’s 500-lap race, Kahne raced in the top-10 and battled back from a late-race speeding penalty to finish 14th in the Great Clips Chevrolet SS.

During the first stage of the race, Kahne reached the top-10 and ended it in the 20th position. After not pitting during the Stage 1 break, the 36-year-old restarted in the seventh position for Stage 2. Before the green flag waved for the second stage, Kahne reported that he liked the handling of his No. 5 machine but really wanted a long green-flag run to showcase the car’s performance. During Stage 2 Kahne remained in the top-12, and secured the 10th position to end the stage. For the first 60 laps of Stage 3 the Enumclaw, Washington, native was in the top-10. On Lap 336 Kahne visited pit road during the 10th caution of the race for service to the Great Clips Chevy. Unfortunately, he received a pit road speeding penalty which sent him from the ninth position back to 18th. After the restart Kahne went one lap down on Lap 389 after he was passed by the leader.

Date: Sunday, April 2, 2017
Event: Martinsville 500
Series: NASCAR Cup Series

Start/Finish: 13th/14th (Completed 500 of 500 laps)

Fortunately, the 11th caution of the race came out on Lap 391 and Kahne was the beneficiary of the free pass. With just under 100 laps left in the 263-mile race, Kahne was in the top-20 when he received nose damage to the Great Clips Chevy after the line of cars he was racing in stacked up. The damage was just cosmetic and Kahne continued to soldier on in the No. 5 Chevy. The 14th caution of the race came out on Lap 432 for a car spinning in front of Kahne. He restarted 12th on Lap 436 and battled in the top-15 for the remainder of the race, ultimately finishing 14th in the Great Clips Chevrolet SS.

Kasey Kahne on Martinsville Finish:
“We kind of ran about the same spot all day. We were really close but just needed a little more forward drive. In order to get that I was too tight rolling, so we would just go back and forth with that. I think we ended about as good as I felt throughout the race. Just had some places to make up with speeding on pit road. I just got going a little too quick out of the box. That put us back a little bit, but I think we finished about where we were.”
