Accident Ends Race Early for Kahne at Kentucky
Kasey Kahne and the No. 5 Mountain Dew team had a solid race ahead of them in the Kentucky 400 at Kentucky Speedway. The 37-year-old veteran driver was racing in the Top-15 all night until an accident on lap 94 ended the team’s day early.
Date: Saturday, July 8, 2017
Event: Kentucky 400
Series: NASCAR Cup Series
Location: Kentucky Speedway (1.5-mile speedway)
Start/Finish: 23rd/38th (Completed 93 of 267 laps)
The Mountain Dew team qualified for the 400-mile race in 23rd position and Kahne quickly moved up to 14th position by Lap seven. He remained in the hunt and finished Stage 1 in 15th-place. The team made minor adjustments to the car under caution to help with the handling in the corners.
Unfortunately, on Lap 94, Kahne was involved in a multi-car accident and his No. 5 Chevy hit the outside wall damaging the race car. The team could not continue the race and was relegated to a 38th-place finish.
Kasey Kahne on Kentucky:
“It was just a restart, I had a run on the No. 6 and I got under him getting into Turn 1 down the front stretch and he just drove over my front end, pretty simple.”
“The racing is fine. I mean it’s not easy to pass. It’s tough to pass for sure once you get strung out, so you’ve got to go on restarts and try to get positions. I had one good restart, one I lost a couple of spots and that one I had a position and he (the No. 6) just ran me over. It’s tough because you need to do that on restarts, you know you need to be aggressive.”
