Kahne Finishes 21st in Michigan
It was a challenging day for the Farmers Racing team during the Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. While the team raced in the Top-15 for most the day, an air gun issue forced the team to pit twice under caution and lose ground on the field during the final laps of the race, ultimately leaving the team with a 21st place finish.
Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS, started the race in 16th position. It was the 37-year-old’s 27th career start at the two-mile speedway located in Brooklyn, Michigan.
Date: Sunday, June 18, 2017
Event: Firekeepers Casino 400
Series: NASCAR Cup Series
Location: Michigan International Speedway (2-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 16th/21st (Completed 200 of 200 laps)
During Stage 1, Kahne, a previous winner at Michigan, reported that the car was tight in the corners but “pretty good” throughout the 60-lap segment. During the race, Kahne utilized the in-car trackbar adjuster to make handling changes. The No. 5 consistently raced in the Top-15 and finished the segment in 12th position.
Heading into Stage 2 of the 200-lap event, Kahne found that his trackbar adjustments from inside the car were not helping it turn in the center of the corner or the entry. He, again, kept the No. 5 Chevrolet in the Top-15 for most of the 60-lap segment and finished Stage 2 just outside the Top-15 in 16th position.
The final 120 laps of the race proved the most challenging for the Farmers Racing team. Just thirty laps into the final segment of the race, during a routine pit stop, the rear tire changer had an issue with the pit gun. His air gun malfunctioned and the left rear tire of the No. 5 Chevy did not get mounted fully onto the race car. Kahne had to limp around the track and come back into the pits for a new tire to be properly mounted.
The issue in the pits along with multiple restarts during the last 50 laps of the race proved challenging for the team. Kahne raced as high as 16th during the final laps but ultimately finished the race in 21st position.
