Up and Down Day for Farmers Team in Texas
Kasey Kahne and the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS team entered race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway with a fresh notebook and a newly-paved racing surface to tackle. However, the team would have to do so from the 35th position in Sunday’s 500 miler after the No. 5 Chevy was one of numerous cars that didn’t make it through pre-qualifying inspection in the allotted time to participate in Round 1 of qualifying.
Kahne ultimately took the green flag from the rear of the field in a backup No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS after making contact with the wall in the closing stages of final practice on Saturday. Happy with the handling of his black and blue Chevy, Kahne steadily moved through traffic. He was up to 28th at Lap 15, 20th at Lap 20, 10th at Lap 39 and ninth at Lap 57 but a tight-handling condition in the closing laps of Stage 1 moved Kahne to a 14th-place effort after the race’s first 85 laps.
Date: Sunday, April 9, 2017
Event: Texas 500
Series: NASCAR Cup Series
Location: Texas Motor Speedway (1.5-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 35th/38th (Completed 303 of 334 laps)
During the ensuing 85-lap stage segment, Kahne raced between the 13th and 15th positions before a two-tire pit call by crew chief Keith Rodden placed Kahne eighth with just over 40 laps remaining in the stage. However, a loose No. 5 Chevy moved him to 13th by the time the green checkered flag fell.
Heading to pit road before the final segment, Kahne found himself outside of the top 20 in 24th on Lap 182. He found the top 20 once again on Lap 215 and continued to push his way forward through two rounds of green-flag pit stops. With 44 laps to go, Kahne was running 17th but a flat right-rear tire forced him to pit road for fresh rubber. Upon exiting his pit stall, the Farmers Insurance Chevy broke an axle and had to go to the garage for repairs. Kahne was able to return to the track with a little more than 10 laps remaining and took the checkered flag 38th.
